Random Baggage Checks Now in Place at Sky Harbor
Phoenix, AZ --Last week Phoenix Police arrested two alleged criminals, accused of stealing bags from Sky Harbor. We commend the excellent work of the Phoenix Police who are working hard to get this luggage back to its owners as soon as possible, but it will take some time as most bags no longer have ID and they are now evidence in a criminal case.
After becoming aware of the situation on Tuesday, the city of Phoenix Aviation Department went into immediate action; evaluating the situation and working with airport partners on how to address it.
“We are extremely concerned about this and want our passengers to know that we have taken steps to make checked luggage at the airport more secure, for the protection of our customers,” said Carl Newman, Assistant Aviation Director.
The following is now in place:
1. Increased police and security patrols in the baggage claim area
2. Increased video surveillance of the baggage claim area
3. Random inquiries by airline staff ensuring that baggage identification matches a passenger’s claim check or ID
4. Overhead announcements warning passengers to be prepared to show their ID
“We are continuing to work with our airport partners on long-term solutions to mitigate this issue and we will keep the public informed of any non-security sensitive information,” Newman said.
Here’s how passengers can help:
- As you would in any situation, protect your valuables. You wouldn’t leave your critical medications or expensive jewelry out of your control in any situation and we don’t recommend you do that with luggage either.
- Mark your bags clearly so you recognize them immediately, and they stand out as unique to you. Tie a colored ribbon on your bag for easier ID.
- When you arrive at any airport, go to the baggage claim as soon as possible to collect your bags, so they aren’t left circling on the carousel.
- Always report suspicious behavior to any airport staff member.
- Have your claim check or ID ready at baggage claim so that if you are approached by staff, you won’t be delayed looking for this information.
