Community Noise Reduction Program Receives National Recognition

2009 continues to be a year of recognition of excellence for Sky Harbor and the Community Noise Reduction Program (CNRP). CNRP has been awarded the AAAE Randy Jones Award for Excellence in Airport Noise Mitigation.

The national competition recognizes the efforts of an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to airport noise mitigation. Committee members of the 2009 AAAE Airport Noise Mitigation Symposium chose CNRP through a rigorous selection process. Submissions were evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Known for employing innovative techniques in the solution of complex issues and problems;
  • A reputation for enhancing the relationship between airports and the community;
  • Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for airport neighbors;
  • Recognition as a leader in the airport noise mitigation industry;
  • Developed tools or techniques; and
  • A contributor to the knowledge base of the industry.

CNRP Program Manager Mary Beth Thompson and Project Manager Trina Harrison accepted the award on behalf of Sky Harbor on Oct. 5, 2009, at the Ninth Annual AAAE Airport Noise Mitigation Symposium in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Randy Jones Award comes on the heels of CRNP’s selection by the Arizona Preservation Foundation and Arizona State Historic Preservation Office/Arizona State Parks as a recipient of the 2009 Arizona Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Award. CNRP was one of ten organizations recognized for exceptional achievements in preserving Arizona’s prehistoric and historic resources.

Since 1995, CNRP has provided sound mitigation services to over 1,700 homes located within noise impacted areas surrounding PHX Sky Harbor Airport. The goal of the program was to create a more comfortable living environment by significantly reducing aircraft noise inside the homes in both Phoenix and neighboring Tempe. After more than 13 years of serving the communities surrounding Sky Harbor, the Program completed its final phases in June 2009.

As a continuation of commitment to its neighboring communities, Sky Harbor began its Sound Insulation Mitigation Services (SIMS) in June 2009, offering sound mitigation services to schools, churches and community centers surrounding the Airport.
